Is there a better keyword research tool that exists that is better than adwords? Not only will adwords tell you the words that are related to the topic you're searching for, they also tell your exactly how many searches were done today for the keyword, and more.
Related Keywords And More
Type your subject into the adwords keyword tool and they will tell you other terms people search for that are related to your keyword.
You can also use the tool to find out what keywords a website uses by choosing the "Website content" url.
You can then drill down by choosing any of the returned keywords and putting them back into the search box.
PLUS - from the "Choose columns to display" you can see the google trends data or "search volume trends", average CPC, and more.
Tell Me Exactly How Many Searches Were Done TODAY For The Keyword
It's real simple to see how many searches are being done RIGHT NOW for a given keyword. Not an estimate, not a trend, but exact numbers.
Simply create an adwords campaign and set your bids high enough to reach the front page. The adwords statistics will tell you exactly how many people are putting that search term into the box.
The AWESOME Thing About Adwords
The biggest hurdle this month to me learning adwords is I get distracted because I am repeatedly finding keywords that are getting a bunch of impressions in adwords yet when i look in the google search results there is little to NO competition for the keyword. Seriously.
So that awesome thing about adwords is it is an AMAZING keyword research tool for you seo efforts.
Launch a campaign, get some data for a day or two, then go build regular blog pages about the long tail keywords with the best stats.
Sorry 45n5, But that costs me money
If done correctly it won't cost you much. Kill your keywords that are costing you a bunch. And let your long tail keywords soak up the adwords impression data.
Also read this article: Gaming Google Quality Score. If you aren't getting any impressions (like me last week) I recommend the "player" approach.
But High Trafficked Keywords Have The Most Competition!

Adwords - The Best Keyword Tool On The Planet
Can you tell me a better keyword research tool than Adwords? Not only does it tell you what words people use that are related to your topic it also gives you historical and real time data about the keywords.
I wouldn't give a dime to any keyword research tool until you've got yourself an adwords account.

Most tools don't help. They give you so many keywords that wading through the list is just like writing them all down manually anyway.
You are right about Adwords though. I have use Adwords to improve my SEO and vice versa. A keyword is a keyword whether you pay for it or put it on your site and you might as well get your data from "the" search engine.

There are better tools on the market, they're just not free.

@steven - I've never seen any better than adwords@stephan - excactly. If i'm building content to rank in google I think getting your keyword data directly from google is the best you can do ;)

Glad to see the passion is there - wish I had known you were up in G'town back when I lived in Richmond. Bet we could have put together a project.
Couple things, though. One thing new folks should watch is exactly why there is no competition for some words. In some b2b fields, it's like adwords when it first started... google cash, but many seemingly great opportunities, ask yourself - "why is it there?" Sometimes, you have a great deal. Other times, the keyword is one that simply doesn't convert.
If you are going the typo route, find some way to get those into your copy, because I had a heck of a time keeping some active for long. Not sure how they figure it out because some would stay live, but it seemed that once I got a few clicks, they would be disabled. If you're automating I suppose it's not that big of a deal, but it takes a looooong time chasing long-tail misspellings unless you can really scale it.
Sometimes it's better to go short tail, forget the 10,000 keyword lists, and nail that landing page.

"it takes a looooong time chasing long-tail misspellings unless you can really scale it."certainly, but it is an awesome weapon for anybody going after seo traffic. That is, load up the keywords for your articles you are writing, all mispelled, and see if there are any opportunities available ;)
Now if you just want to look for any typos pulling traffic for something broad like all models of "digital cameras" or something it will take a bunch of time.
I think the big thing between winning or losing is getting an edge anyway you can, and I think there is a huge edge to be found in the post above ;) And it's actionable!

Help! Where do you go within adwords to find the stats on other keywords people are searching for?
I thought you can only know the stats for your own chosen keywords in your own ad groups?
Am I missing something?

Adwords is an awesome tool for finding great keyword phrases for good blog posts.
I haven't been using Adwords enough lately, I get so sidetracked sometimes. So I thank you for this post, a great reminder to get back to Adwords.

I like the adwords tool, but I also use Keyword Elite to find more keywords than what the adwords tool gives you. I like Keyword Elite, because it's just a one-time payment, not every month. The videos on the sales page pretty much show you what you get (at least that's what was on the sales page a year or so ago when I bought it).David says on December 19, 2007
Excellent post. Adwords is definately an awesome tool for marketing.

I really like the AdWords tool for doing market research too. The average CPC estimates are way off compared to my real campaigns at times but other than that it is a great resource.

I notice quite a few people brining up other tools ... which is fine, some are well worth the money ... but I think that there is no tool overall better than actually running test campaigns in AdWords. everything else is a simulation/data modeling effort ... some very good ... but none are the "real deal".You can get an idea, put up several landing pages (different sales copy) with a "Sign up to be notified" squeeze and in a few days know exactly if it is even worth pursuing the actual product launch ... but it costs money? Sure ... if the idea is any good ... if it is a winner the successful clicks are a very small investment in your startup costs ... if the ideas/ad copy goes nowhere, you will have virtually no cost .... and the knowledge of what _not_ to do at a very small price.
Happy holidays, mark and everyone else out there in this great group.
