I started working on a new affiliate site today and thought I would share a few of the basics I start with, let you comment on them, and add your own ideas. I'll share the url shortly with you:

Info Pages

Pages like about, tos, disclaimer, contact, are all necessary pages that are required for a good affiliate site.

I like to make my about page early on to get an idea of what I'm building as I go.

Also, you might want to bookmark this page for this step: 20 Types of Pages that Every Blogger Should Consider

Blog

I don't like to start affiliate sites that are a blog only, but I do like to have a blog on the site, even if it's only updated a few times per month.

A great place to put the blog is on a subdomain like blog.domain.com or in a folder like domain.com/blog.

I use my homepage to aggregate and link to all the sections of the affiliate site.

My favorite blog software is Typepad.com.

Forum

Also great as a subdomain or folder is a forum. Always these things start slow but eventually get some questions being asked, especially if you direct any contacts to post the questions in the forum.

Once upon a time I tried vbulletin but it got hammered with spam just as much as a free version. Punbb has been good to me so far, but there are many free forums that are good:

Forums aren't easy to make money directly from but they do bring eyeballs and links, plus other people write the content for you for free ;)

Guides/Pillar Articles

I like to think of any guides, reviews, etc that I want as static pages and will try to promote to other bloggers or update frequently.

"best of" are popular with products. How to's, lists, etc. are great linkbait.

Of course you can simply put all of these pages as blog posts but I like to give them their own html page that I can feature and manipulate real easy.

Newsletters?

I don't do newsletters (for most sites). Because most affilaite sites I have use rss for the blog I use feed burner to get subscribers.

I'm not sure why people run a newsletter sign up and a feedburner sign up so you will have to share the details on this one.

Redirects

I don't link directly to merchants, rather I redirect to them. Deciding if and how you will do this from the start will help.

Merchants stop their affiliate programs and products go out of stock or get discontinued. If you use a redirect you can either send them to another product or a custom landing page explaining this.

Social Networking Accounts

I go and get login accounts for most of the video services, youtube, and a few other profile sites for my sites name like twitter, squidoo, etc.

People like to subscribe to info in many different ways now and it's best to give them the options.

Also, if you are using a keyword rich domain you might rank real well for some of these profiles.

The Basics

That's the basics off the top of my head of what goes into making an affiliate site for me. I usually leave my homepage as a pointer to all that ;)

What am I missing? What would you do different?

Are you building the site for one affiliate program or for several?. Why would you build it on a different site instead of putting it on 45n5?

I've got a longer reply but tomorrow. As far as:

"Why would you build it on a different site instead of putting it on 45n5?"

Different targets. 45n5 is more for affiliate marketing/blogging/make money online.... Affiliate sites should be for shoppers.

Is this the best way to work with affiliate programs or is it better to use PPC?

I am kind of new to this field but it is one I think I need to be into.

Can you point me to one of your sites so I can see how it looks or anyones for that matter.
45n5 says on April 23, 2008

@homebizseo - I'm with @trust - you put them on your own domain. from everything from theming a domain to branding to typin traffic etc.

@colin - I'll be showing the site I'm building soon.

ppc or seo/links? There is never a right or wrong, all sites are different (and have different visitors), see what works for your site.

Totally agree with having pillar articles, info pages etc.

Any specific reasons for choosing Typepad for blog compare to wordpress? pros and cons of each? I haven't used Typepad platform.

Forums: Having forums is good as long as there are good number of users and quality posts. Adding one forum on a different site and using it on all of your affiliate sites may workout well.

typepad never gets hacked and they do all the updates plus they have customer support that is awesome ;)

it's a no brainer if you care about your business

I have lots of affiliate websites which are just plain static sites without blogs. I have only a few blogs, and all of them run on Wordpress software. Yes, left to itself,Wordpress is very much vulnerable to hackers, but I use a paid plugin to protect the admin area.

It’s not fraud if you cannot read the fine print get some glasses or hire a lawyer.
But I do see you point but ultimate it is your responsibility

When I promote affiliate programs I create static review/pre-sales pages to attract organic traffic. Then I work on feeding traffic to the static page. This can be done with forums, blogs etc.

I don't use PPC successfully. I rely on SEO of my pages. It always seems like the cost of clicks is too high to make a profit from legitimate affiliate programs. But PPC would make sense where I am marketing my own product.

So, I am currently working on my own products and traffic funnel pages with the plan to recruit affiliates to leverage the marketing of my own products.

I guess if you recently purchased say a latest model digital camera, you could set up a static review site about it with a forum for users to share pictures and tips on using it. The same goes for a laptop or any other product.

Then make your home page the sales letter to push potential buyers to the affiliate link plus maybe an incentive for them to buy via your link.
