spammerblip.jpgUpdate - They have now removed my ENTIRE account. See below.

It is the opinion of 45n5.com that blip.tv sucks.

45n5.com creates "web reality shows" where I chronicle making money online and building cool stuff online. On Mondays I chronicle building ShowYourAdHere.com, a FREE ad server and much more.

I take my videos and upload them to various video hosting sites via a tool called TubeMogul.com. I am making original content daily and I think as original video producers we are doing these video hosting sites a favor by uploading original content videos to their sites.

Sure I get some benefits of views from the site, but they get the content. These sites would not exist if they didn't have OUR videos.

The only videos I upload contain original content. I only upload one original content video per day. They have no commercials in the pre or post roll. Plus they are all released with a liberal creative commons license, I'm hardly trying to get rich with my videos.

Blip.tv Sucks - They Censored (aka removed) My Latest Video

This Monday I uploaded the showyouradhere.com video and blip.tv removed it because they opine it violated their terms of service:

Content that has as its sole or primary purpose to advertise a particular product or service that, in the sole judgment of Blip.tv, does not otherwise have redeeming value to the community.

Whatever, it's their site, they can do what they want. However when I wrote them back explaining the sole purpose wasn't merely to promote the site but to chronicle the adventures of building the site, interactively, they basically called me a spammer and said tough, emphasis is mine:

Hello Mark,

Our terms of service prohibit content that is primarily promoting commercial services. Is "ShowYourAdHere" essentially commercial? Since YouTube appears to be your primary host linked from 45n5, you seem to be using blip for driving traffic. And your content is reminiscent of the dozens of affiliate link spammers we purge daily, so I'm sure you can appreciate why this combination of factors resulted in the deletion.

Thanks,
Charles

Shownote 1: ShowYourAdHere.com has a commercial element but is also a FREE ad server which improves the lives of bloggers.

Shownote 2: Yet another reason to think or rebranding, so I'm not one of those "affiliate link spammers".

The head scratcher

These aren't some hippie loving "f-the-system and no ads" type of people, oh no. Blip.tv is a VERY commercial service. Visit their home page and the FIRST text you read is:

Got a great show? Get some great ads to run with it, and make some money while you're at it. We split all advertising money 50/50, but in order to get that money you have to turn on ads. Choose between overlays and postrolls and more!

Screengrab:

Finally

It's their site they can do what they want, no big deal, but so can we ;) I won't be uploading any more videos to blip.tv.

I know couple of you use blip.tv as your primary video host and a few of you debating who to choose as your primary video host.

My opinion is blip.tv sucks, I would avoid them. Not only will they delete your videos, they'll be rude about it also.

(funny, the video I recorded for today, which will be up later was about why I don't spam anymore.)

Update - about 2 hours after posting this I get this email:

Your account "45n5" has been removed from blip.tv.

I'm sorry, but we've removed your account from blip.tv because it looked to us like you were posting videos to our service that had as a primary purpose the advertisement of a particular product or service. Blip is a site for original Web shows and our Terms of Service prohibit content that's primarily advertisement.

We're wrong about this sometimes. If you believe that your content truly has value to the blip.tv community (other than in getting them to buy something from you) please reply to this e-mail and tell us why. A real human being will review your e-mail and we'll figure out from there.

Here's the applicable section of our TOS for your reference:
"Our goal is to promote the free-flowing exchange of expression relating to members interests, activities and hobbies while maintaining high standards of respect and decency. In order to attain this goal, and in addition to the other content and/or action restrictions set forth in these Terms of Use and elsewhere on the Blip.tv website, the following content is prohibited on Blip.tv:
* Content that has as its sole or primary purpose to advertise a particular product or service that, in the sole judgment of Blip.tv, does not otherwise have redeeming value to the community.

Thank you,
blip.tv Support

Obviously there is no need to respond as they have already called me an "affiliate link spammer".

They say "Blip is a site for original Web shows". LOL. I make an original web show every day.

Wowzer. Stay away from them like the flu.

Wow, I have been to BlipTv in a long time since I stoped making videos. But that is quiet revealing. Especially that ShowYourAdHere can be used to manage ads on your blog for free.

Hmmm, have to rethink if I want to go back there.

Funny coincidence. I posted a video to them yesterday, which was a tutorial on shopping for online travel insurance. They thought it was an ad for an insurance company and I received my termination notice this morning. However I called and spoke with Jarred, who was very nice, apologized, and reinstated my account. Apparently they have been getting hit with lots of pyramid marketing videos and are trying to sort their way through it. He said they are trying to do better at figuring it all out, and suggested that using the description field when uploading will help prevent getting blocked. Only thing I can say it is sure is a pleasure using their site compared with Youtube. Of course, they were down 1/2 the day yesterday to to their ISP blowing a router, so that didn't really help matters much. I'm still optimistic however.

thanks vlad

@beatofhawaii - when i contacted them I got called an "affiliate link spammer". I documented the email response in the post above. thanks for the input.

not that big of deal though, sites like theirs are a dime a dozen. Just wanted to post a warning to others about what can happen with them, I know people that read this use their service or think about using it.

Mark,

It seems that your blog ad server idea might have hit a nerve with them and put them in hot water with their own advertisers. Whenever a company responds like they did I would look to their own wallet. They are not out to protect their customer but rather their wallet in this case. I have never used this site and now will never use this site based on what I have heard here. Just goes to show you the power of the Internet and I am sure to tell everyone I know not to use their site as well. Give it enough time and they will soon be gone from the Internet.

Wow. Ive been kicked out of here and there for RoS Violations, but honestly - this is just funny and sad.

Do you have the video hosted somewhere else?

Mark,

I like to offer my honest opinion, so I hope you don't take offense at all to this...

I think posting that the site sucks because they deleted on of your videos that could be mistaken as a bit spammy is a bit of an over-reaction. Usually, I agree with you, but I'm not sure here.

That said, I really have to think they got offended and that's why your account was deleted. I have several sites and on a couple, people have come right out and told me that I personally suck, on my own site. I have always felt that the best (and most professional) reaction to someone publicly saying that you suck is to respond professionally, explaining why the naysayer is wrong, or open a line of discussion either in public or private to determine ways in which you can improve. Blip.tv seems to have a different opinion on how to deal with things like this.

THAT said, I think they now deserve the "Blip.tv Sucks" post.

@joe - no offense taken, shoot away with your opinions ;) I don't have to agree though.

@wiseguy - yeah I upload to bunches of sites. However I do know some people that exclusively use blip.tv or are thinking about it so I shared.

@richard - interesting thoughts. I'm not sure what their motivations were. It's painfully obvious my "sole intent" was not to promote products.

Mark.........my man!!!

I used to blog on other forums and one day...they inactivated my account cos they do not agree with my opinions.

What the Fuk? I was making them rich and drawing traffic.

Guess what.......I created my own Forums and the policy is...I do not banned any users and eventually my sites become #1 and kicked my competitors off the radar screen.

Bottom line........ they created a monster ...and they kick ed their own a-ss!!
Now who is laughing all the way to the bank!!!

My policy is this:

If YOu take the time and initiative to blog in my forum, why should I ban you for participating...it is kinda of stupid to inactivate your account!!!

@beatofhawaii: by my count, blip was down for just under an hour. Funny thing, Youtube was down yesterday for a while: who broke youtube? I guess it doesn't matter how much money you have...

As for the original post, I don't think the assertion that blip is being hypocritical over advertising holds water. I don't make video, but I know a lot of folks that do - truly original content that's scripted and acted. That is the kind of content I believe blip is focused targeting, not "make money online" videos.

They've made many creators very happy. Blip.tv rocks.
Seth Reed says on February 14, 2008

sorry, it looks like the link to the youtube story got stripped out. Here it is: http://valleywag.com/356300/who-broke-youtube

@seth - "That is the kind of content I believe blip is focused targeting, not "make money online" videos."

Original is original regardless of the way you slice it. And not all of my videos are "make money online", I also cover programming, marketing, etc. I'm basically chronicling my days as an online marketer.

There are many video producers at blip.tv that earn bunches of money are much more commercial than my videos. My videos are not commercial, I DID NOT opt into any advertising scheme there, and they are about as amateur as they get.

All of my blog content is FREE. Showyouradhere.com is a FREE ad server.

When you keep the commercial moneymakers in your system but boot out the amateurs for being "to commercial" that is the very definition of hypocrite.
