Thinking of 10 ways to get traffic to your website or blog and here's what I came up with first, some are more popular and respected than others:

Pay for it search engines - Google, Yahoo, and those have tons of traffic they will sell you.

Pay for it other websites - Buy banners and links (with nofollow) from websites that already have the eyeballs you want.

Get traffic from links (linkbait) - Write content that people like to link to. People follow the links to your site.

Get traffic from social networks (twitter, facebook) - Be sure to tell your friends when you create new content and they will show up.

Get traffic from parasite seo (ezine articles, squidoo) Put quality articles on sites like these and they will rank high in search engines and put a link back to your site in the article footer sending you the traffic.

Get traffic from SEO Write your butt off about topics that people want to know about but there aren't many search results about yet. New products and news come out everyday and the competition starts at 0 for these every day.

Get traffic from offline promotion Business cards, stickers, tshirts, etc.

Get traffic from email Put your website url in your signature, do something creative with it to get more clicks. Email people about interesting content you create and tell them they should look at it cause they might like it.

Get traffic from Video (youtube, yahoo video, etc) Put your url in your description and watermark your videos with your url.

Podcast marketing - Many people have podcasts about your topic with very large audiences. Get people with podcasts to talk about you.

Your turn; What are more tips to get traffic?

I have always reply to SPAM emails with my signature...

Do get some traffic though from those spammers although not a quality one but you will never know.

@roseli - interesting. another thing to do with spam is use it as content for a website ;)

@collin - good luck man, just voted 10 for you.

Don't think I can get away for that long to do it but I'll be watching.

Man you are killing me....

I just realized AOL is not THE web, now you are telling me I need to do all these things to get visitors to my web page? What's next? Are you going to tell me I am not going to make any money?

Can't I just create a page a relax?

Are you still on AOL??? I am not. :)

Ok joking side. I was huge fan of article marketing. Not any more. You have to write several dozens of articles to see any sort of traffic. This gives me an idea for an article, but I think ezine articles and such were/are extremely over hyped on the kind of traffic they can deliver. All that they've done is to create huge amounts of content thanks to jerks like you and I. The SEO value of it i questionable... Hopefully I will develop on it on my blog.

If you are going to write 20 articles for these directories, for goodness sake start a blog.

Mark I have noticed you did not mention press releases. I an a huge fan of PRWeb. They deliver both - traffic and SEO value. SEO value comes from greater probability of some major "news" outlets picking up your press release. Yes it costs money, but it is not like you are going to do a press release once a day.

Sorry for this comments being so lengthy.

Great list!
Make good comments in blogs or pages is another thing you can do to increase your traffic...

Thanks for the great list Mark. Personally, I think I'm really going to explore the whole YouTube / video angle with this. I'm amazed at how some of the craziest things can just go viral and be all over the place. Plus, I've been looking for an excuse to play with video anyway :)

Get traffic from your 404s. Instead of showing a dead page, send them to a marketing page that lists all your sites or products.

Enjoy,

Barbara
