Today Google told us exactly how we can get them to put more of our web pages into their index:

Improved indexing of your pages: We've recently improved our indexing technology so that you can provide a more enhanced Site Search experience for your users. AdSense for search will now index even more pages of your site, as long as we’re able to crawl them, so that your users will see more results from your site in your AdSense for search results. Stay tuned for more updates on future crawl and indexing improvements!

I'm a bit of a geek for watching affiliate sites and blogs get indexed in google so i thought that was great news.

Now they say exactly how to get more pages into their index: Use adsense for search on your blog or site.

Test, Test, Test: As with anything test and see if the change works for your situation.

There aren't many days when Google gives you advice that good ;)

I'm not sure you've interpreted it the same way that I have.

How I read it is that they are saying that the new Custom Search powered AdSense Search tool is better at indexing your site than the old one - not that it'll index your site better for Google's search results.

That's why they say that it'll only improve your results 'if we can crawl them' (ie if they are already being crawled by Google).

So I think they're arguing that the search results are better with the updated AdSense for Search than the old one... not that you'll get more of your pages into Google.

@darren - as far as I can tell "google search results" and "google adsense search results" are the same thing...

eg, if you do a search through an adsense box on a site you get the same results as doing the same search in google using the site: command

interesting take on it, maybe ;)

Check out Matt Cutts and his comments on this here:

"Now let me nip one idea in the bud, because I can already feel a few people thinking it: this is not a backdoor way to get more pages in Google’s index or to improve your search ranking."

I think the post you link to at the AdSense blog was poorly worded.

Yes the custom search that now powers AdSense search does seem to be similar/same as normal Google search results but I think what the post is trying to say is that this is better than what AdSense search used to run of (a diff system to custom search).

I don't really know - but Matt seems to be saying that it doesn't help with getting more pages indexed (although is post seems a little poorly worded too).

thanks for the link @darren - that's hilarious

it's like the dad telling the kids they can go to the movies but the mom telling the kids they can't go to the movies ;)

Bet they are having a meeting or two today.

Only time and testing will tell.

The truest part of the whole discussion is ... testing will tell.

Google has always maintained that 'real' searchand AdSense search were different things ... and they, of all people, should know, eh?

But put up a site on any topic, put AdSense on everypage .. you cna take it off in a day ... and tell me which pages did _not_ windup in the index you see when you do a standard Google search. Answer normally is, not many, if any.

The AdSense crawler goes through a page within seconds of the very first AdSense impression. Officially (they say) those are _not_ 'real' search results, but they apparently do not go into the bit bucket, they _seem_ to wind up in the 'real' index.

Only testing will tell.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this with one of my websites, google seemed to be totally ignoring it, then suddenly (out of nowhere) it started receiving quite a bit of traffic, so I popped in a google search box and now it is beginning to get indexed. Of course this may just be coincidental, but to me it sure does look like proof of this news.
