Getting a job in the affiliate marketing industry is not exactly what most people think of when thinking of "make money online" however it has been the path to success for some before you.By working in the affiliate marketing industry you learn the ins and outs first hand and get paid to do it.
What jobs are in the affiliate marketing industry?
There are quite a few people that have been doing affiliate marketing for a long time that usually list "affiliate manager" as something they've done at some point.
Affiliate manager is the only job I'm aware of in the industry. You'll have to help me out with more suggestions.
I can point you in one direction to go look for Affiliate Manager jobs: Affiliate Manager Job Openings
Getting a job in the affiliate marketing industry would be an awesome way to learn about affiliate marketing and make a paycheck while you learn.
Even doing customer service for an affiliate company might teach you some stuff.
If I Started Over
Working inside the affiliate marketing industry is something I never considered when I was just starting, which might have been a dumb move on my part.
Instead, I took a data entry job when transitioning to doing this full time and instead of learning about affiliate marketing I was typing prescriptions into a computer for hours and hours. What a waste!
How to get an affiliate marketing job?
The old catch 22.
I can't get a job without experience and I can't get experience without the job ;)
I'm guessing a successful make money online blog or marketing related site might help your efforts.
I also wouldn't wait around for jobs to find you ;) I'm sure there are many companies and successful individuals that could do some outsourcing to a motivated individual that wants to learn the industry.
Speak up if you know!
I'm not the most knowledgeable to be writing this post but wanted to get the wheels spinning for some of you trying to make money online.
Maybe you haven't had the success yet to pay your bills but love the industry, there might be other ways to get an income doing what you enjoy.
Old heads or people in the know, share any tips, advice, or resources for those interested in affiliate management or working in the industry. Thanks.
Are newbies crazy to think they could get a job in the affiliate marketing industry?

Nice post, Mark.
Having been on the network and merchant side of things over the years, I can definitely say that there's a talent shortage in the affiliate industry. If you've got skills, understand how the networks and industry work (and have a blog to point people to), you can land an account exec job with just a little investigating and networking.
For those looking to get into the more corporate side of the industry and really dive deep into the affiliate world, I think going for a position at a network, publisher or agency is a great career move (plus it opens up other doors that wouldn't have existed otherwise).

Mark,
I was thinking about that too and wrote an article on my site at www.WineInWashington.com about this company
http://www.marchex.com/
They have openings and Welcome to "SUNNY" Seattle!!! but don't forget to bring gloves, hats, scrappers, umbrellas(you whimp!)
Thanks Mark...

Very nice! I once applied for a position but they wouldn't consider me for lack of "experience" as an affiliate manager. It was a part time position too...Is there some affiliate manager school you need to go to and then you get the experience? Is being a successful affiliate marketer not enough?Sam Harrelson says on December 12, 2007
@bernard I think that depends on who you are applying with in terms of company size, history, etc.
My suggestions for people wanting to break into the affiliate management field is to blog blog blog, network with existing people in the affiliate management field (affiliatemanager.net is a great place to start or just find their blogs and interact there), participate on the forums and consider doing something like Affiliate Classroom.
Have those things on your resume (along with practical first hand experience as an affiliate like you have) and you'll be an attractive candidate for anyone.

Interesting post ... although I always look at online venture more as a business for myself instead of trying to score a position with yet another corporation. Job gives security but it still puts you into predicament of dependency.
I prefer to build my own business and get education as you go. There is so much info available for taking that instead of spending time on working as affiliate manager why not just BE an affiliate and "learn on the job" :) Affiliate Classroom is a great place to learn - I fully agree with that statement.

thanks for the valuable input sam, I know you've been there already@alex - yeah I'm stubborn too and "i'll make it myself" mentality but looking back I think for my situation it was not the best choice
thanks for the comments bernard and chris ;)

Actually the SEO company where I work - http://www.justsearching.co.uk - has an affiliate manager.
It may well be a job market that will grow over time.

Alex...I totally agree with you. Build you own during your off time and learn as much as you go. That the beauty of the internet.
Mark, you can always get a job as an affiliate manager, doesn't your site good enough to prove to them that you are qualified?
BUT....my Q is...isn't there is a conflict of interest to hire you?? You might steal their "secrets"??
So it is a double edge sword!!!
Good topic!!

will you give up what you have built?
and be bored during weekend and
making others rich?
just my humble opinion!

@chris - "and be bored during weekend and making others rich?"many affiliate managers get paid a percent commission of what their affiliates make ;)
To you question, I wouldn't give up what I've built now but when i was starting I probably would have thought much differently knowing what I know now ;)

Mark - What happened to your PPC Arbitage campaign? I know it wasn't going well but did you give up? I haven't seen anything about it for a while...

Mark....let play interview drama.
Q: What kind of experience or websites do you have?
Ans: none
-then it shows no experience
or
Respond : oh yea...I have this great blog called 45n5 and making lots of $$$$$
then..
Hummmmm....too much experience and....why does he want to leave and....
You know what I mean, Mark.

@gift ideas - still playing, I just get distracted real easy and i discuss in my latest http://www.45n5.com/permalink/adwords-the-best-keyword-research-tool-on-the-plan.html
@chris "Hummmmm....too much experience and....why does he want to leave and...."
this blog would be an asset as an affiliate manager. The goal of an affiliate manager is to recruit as many good affiliates as possible. This blog would only help that in my opinion ;)
