equal.jpgJust because Tom gets $2 per click for his baseball site doesn't mean you will get $2 per click for your baseball site.

Google even tells their advertisers the price they pay per click (the price YOU get minus commission) will be discounted based on the ROI (return on investment) google thinks the click will make an advertiser.

We've also made improvements to our smart pricing technology, which discounts the price of clicks on specific sites based on their likelihood to result in strong advertiser ROI. Source

In other words not all adsense clicks are created equal. Plus, it doesn't matter what tom, dick, or harry makes per click or what some online tool (pun intended) tells you.

Sidenote: Interesting they say "specific sites" and not "pages" eh?

What clicks pay the most?

What clicks return the "highest ROI" to advertisers and then google collects the most money on your behalf? That is the million dollar question.

I don't have an answer however I can take some guesses:

The domain "theme" MUST be relevant to the ad the visitor is clicking on or you will get discounted. For instance you can't cram your mortgage adsense pages onto a fishing website to get the big paying clicks (never worked for me anyway)

Traffic Geographic Origin Traffic from Canada, US, and Europe will generally pay the highest.

Adsense Account Holder Quality Classic smart pricing definition. If you are a new account with adsense you get paid less per click. If your account performs poorly on other sites you might get discounted across your entire account. Adsense rewards authority and performance with websites and with adsense accounts.

Traffic Referral Origin Did the visitor that clicked the ad end up at your site from a good site or junk site? Google knows the quality of almost any site on the web (how do you think they get pagerank? rank pages? etc) and therefore if a junk site sends you a visitor their click to your ads will be discounted. In ADDITION they probably have a good idea of what sites send converting or non converting traffic I'm guessing.

Traffic Keyword Origin If you get traffic from search engines what keywords did the searcher use to arrive at your site. Adsense KNOWS these things. If adsense considers the keywords are good for conversions they are going to pay more but if they are stinker keywords you get less. Ever heard this "attract traffic looking to buy stuff?". PLUS google already knows what keywords people WILL spend the most money on so it's probably not that hard for google to figure out what is valuable keyword referral traffic and what isn't.

Time Of Day Your clicks for the same niche will earn more and less based on the times of day you get the click. This isn't based on discounting rather more advertisers spend more money during US daytime hours than US night hours.

Those are my suggestions. Why not put on your tinfoil hat and make a few of your own?

Very interesting post, Mark. I have a variety of sites, in which a couple are set up almost exactly the same. One routinely gets .50 - 1.00 per click, while the other is lucky to get .05 per click.

Guess I'll have to do some digging.

lol, good luck with the digging, it could make you insane though trying to figure it out ;-)

Good analysis, Mark. I will add one more suggestion. For foreign language websites (hope everybody has a couple of them :)), clicks originating from the native country pay more than clicks originating from any other countries. For example, clicks from Japan for a Japanese language website are paid more than clicks originating from other countries.

hey mark, great write up. I know you were explaining this to me earlier, but being able to read all that really helped me. thanks again.

I think it's all down to the Google Nodding Donkey, but I also think there's a lot of truth in that the less adsense you have on the site, the more money you get per click ;)

This explains a lot to my about why some of my sites sometimes get 50 cents per click and other times I only see a penny -- on the same site. Thanks for the post!

I've got a PR4 guitar mini/personal site that regularly beats my blogs on Adsense earnings although it has about 1/3 of the traffic of the blogs. Your article explains why it's earning around $45 a month while the blogs are lucky to get $10.

I guess the lesson is to get more Adsense money develop product related sites that bring in active buyers.

I have recently been affected by some smart pricing : my clicks went from > $.5 to

Thanks Mark. Very interesting view of adsense click pricing.
I have recently been affected by some smart pricing : my clicks went from superior of $.5 to inferior of $0.05 . I had added a new website under my adsense account (a website with wery low CTR, CPM).

I was not aware that the time of day could affect the price...

PS: The previous comment was me as well but the system did not like the superior symbol ;)

Thanks for giving me yet one more reason to wean myself off dependence on adsense. Off to look for more affiliate programs...

Great post. The points you mentioned are a good refresher course. I want to get higher payouts per click (who doesn't) so I'm going to do some work on that.

Thanks your nice post, I will test the adsense layout in my site.

Hey man, nice post. I'm so used to stumbling across your videos on YouTube it really didn't occur to me that you had your own site. So I'll be a steady reader from here on out.

But the reason I found your site was I was googling around trying to find a solution to my .03 and even .01 clicks. I had recently did some arbitrage from foreign countries and my .79 cent clicks dropped like a rock within hours.
