It's the end of the month so it's time to check out what the make money online blogosphere has been up to based on stats. Next year will be fun to do a "year end" wrap up but this year I've only got 3 months data so let's work with what we've got:Overall the group grew again this month, even after I trimmed a dozen blogs that hadn't updated in over 4 weeks, but collectively our stats have fallen. Not just third party metrics but also our posting frequency.
We also still LOVE blogging as it's our most used word for the third month in a row and besides the expected christmas/2007/2008 entering the most used words Entrecard made a first time appearance in the top 25.

I am hoping that you'll address a question I have been asking for over a month.
"How does one progress up the ladder on your list?"
Personally, I think this list isn't very helpful as PageRank, Technorati Ranking, and Alexa Rank play a factorization in how people rank on your list. I had said time and time again, I could start a brand new blog and reveal my deepest and darkest secrets on it and rank terrible on the list.

@gary - "How does one progress up the ladder on your list?"I answered that over a month ago. I'm not divulging the details and i change the "weights" frequently. That's the same answer I tell everybody.
"I could start a brand new blog and reveal my deepest and darkest secrets on it and rank terrible on the list."
99% of blogs starting tomorrow won't be around in 6 months regardless of the content.
So you are correct that the god of making money online could start blogging tomorrow and rank poorly on the list, however he/she would be an exception.
Overall however, long term, the metrics work rather well in my opinion ;)

In standard business... a manager can't hold an employee accountable towards a certain metric or standard without communicating to that employee what they are responsible for. When an employer holds an employee to a certain standard of performance, that employee is trained and aware of how to meet, if not exceed on their SOP.
Mark, you have a list that hold over 200 people to a ranking on a very touchy subject... and refuse to educate people how they can become the #1 employee.
Who doesn't want to be #1? And unless you offer an SOP on how that can be done, your list is bogus. I appreciate what you do and think the list is an awesome idea, however, if you were communicate to people how one could excel and improve their rank on it, the list would be much better.

Garry, Mark is doing just what Google does. They don't reveal their algorithm either, and they change it frequently. If everyone knew the algorithm, it would be too easy to spam it. I feel that it's Mark's list, so he can do as he likes with it. ;)Garry Conn says on December 31, 2007
No debate there Pat. I agree with that. However, it would be nice to know what a blogger has to do to rank well. You mention Google as an example and they do have documentation on how to rank well in their search engine. There is Webmaster Guidelines as well as an entire support forum up and running that help people.
I am not busting his chops, I am offering feedback about the list. I think if anyone's name is on a list, they would like to know how it is possible to work towards improving their rank.

You know Mark,
I do respect you... and think that you do a lot of great work for the community. I really and truly feel that way. I don't mean to come across as if I am busting your chops, I am really not. I actually love this list a lot. Part of me feels that it would be helpful if you were to offer more information and tips on how people on the list can rank better.
This is your list, you are the creator of it, and to be honest... it is a damn good list. I am going to continue doing what I do and publishing the content that I write. My blog is about teaching people how to make money online, it is a journal that documents what I do myself to make money online and I write direct from my heart and people seem to like it.
Anyone that goes out of their way to help others is totally respected in my eyes... and you have done well more than the average teacher. There are many teachers in this business, I am one too, so it is great to see others really have a passion for what I love to do as well: teach!
Keep up the great work!
Best Regards,
Garry Conn

@pat - thanks, look forward to the return of pbd.com@garry - I wouldn't sweat the rankings.
I've been at 45n5 since late 2005 and will be blogging here for many more years so I'm looking at things through a much longer lens than who's hot for one month.
And I actually built a "who's hot now" into the rankings originally with a digg style voting on the moneylinks that would affect the top100, however nobody was voting so I removed it and just went with the long term stuff.
