The 2010 Seo Rule - Build a web page that is 20% better than any of the top 10 results and then promote the heck out of it.
Calacanis answers when questions what is considered a good site or web page, and I'm paraphrasing "do a search for you keyword, look at the top ten results, if you can make a site that is 20% better than those then go for it, otherwise don't bother".
Mix that with Vaynerchuck saying "Content is King, but PR is Queen!". That means to me that your #1 priority is content however an almost as important #2 is your promotion and public relations for that content.
Basically what me and many people have said before, I'm just giving it a name now, The 2010 Seo Rule, and also providing everyone that asks me for SEO advice in the future to check out this post.
Go and create a web page for you desired keyword that is 20% (at least) better than every single top 10 result for that search query and then go promote the heck out of it. That's my seo advice.

this is redunkulus - wtf is calacanis now your boss? the only thing that gives him any authority is when sheep like you start spreading his BS! make a page if you think you can get traffic and money from it, what are you polluting? the internet is not owned by anyone, next he is going to go after registrars for selling domains that don't have business plans and are not looking for VC.

@fred - I don't care where a good idea comes from, if it's a good idea it's a good idea, whether from calacanis or an episode of batman.I didn't agree with much of his speech, but i did like his criteria for establishing a good web page.

Vaynerchuck is awesome. I just wrote on him today as well, in my "Branding Power" post. He has killer content and is looked up to by many in this industry. He is doing things right.

Calacanis sure is getting a lot of publicity out this haha! I had no idea about his search engine site until he took a shot at us affiliates during his ASW speech.
Anyway, I think their is at least some truth to what he is saying. The 20/10 is a bit to extreme in my opinion but building real sites with good content is a must moving into the future. We got to please Google :-).

I wonder how much ASW payed for calacanasitellyoutoo to speak to us? I must admit he is the only person I know that gets paid to sell his craptastic product.
Has anyone ever done any research to find out how many people "ads by google" is a paid ad, yet they are all over mahalo, that is not "full disclosure" as he says is so important!

sorry that should be "how many people know"

It is a pretty good rule, though I believe that in less competitive areas you dont even need the better content, just the better marketing. Obviously we should strive for quality, and not settle with anything we dont believe in.

I like the idea - it's simple and easy to follow but it begs the questions, how do you define "20% better"?
Vlad () says on March 4, 2008:
I second Caroline...I think when it comes to this the "quality" generally rests in the eye of the beholder. But I would like to know what does define "20% better"?

I agree with the 20/10 rule and have heard it put different ways for years. I think the first person that I got the most from in this area was Ken Evoy.
When I was designing websites I tried to teach my clients about the search engine optimization strategies that would help them succeed but most people are just lazy. The don't want to put in much effort but would love to know an easier way to accomplish the same thing without any work or paying others to do it for them. :)

This is good stuff... simple and easy to grasp. I listened to Calc's speech too, and thought there were good points on both sides - his and the affiliates who questioned him. At the end of the day, you have to decide which philosophy you will follow... or maybe you will lead? Naw... nobody wants to lead anymore, they just want to keep turning out the same garbage that is already out there hoping to make $0.50 on AdSense...

@all - thanks for the comments ;)re: "what makes a page 20% better?"
that is completely subjective.
I reckon if after you make your page and you could imagine asking 10 random people if the page is 20% better and you get mostly "yes" then you are good ;)

Mark,
I think this is a great post. You are using what you learned from the Affiliate Summit and applying it to your affiliate marketing. Let us know how your next site turns out!

If this same approach applied to Mahalo I would guess about only 20% of pages there would pass the scrutiny of 2010 approach. ;)
However I do not mind good ideas eve if they come from some one who does not walk the walk. Nice post by the way.

@vlad - i would agree that mahalo is rather useless. To me it's a mix between a lame version of wikipedia and a link farm. However, I think Jason's philosophy of 20% better is solid.
So is Gary's "PR is queen" ;)

There is something wrong with your "recent visitors" widget...- no ad is shown Jason says on March 4, 2008
I like that... the "Calacanis 2010 rule"
Here is how I would say it:
If you're going to make a page on the web for a topic you should set a goal of making it 20% better than the top 10 pages that already exist for that topic. If not, find another page you can build that is 20% better.
If everyone were to do this the average quality of pages on the web would increase, and the average user experience on the web would increase. Trust would increase, traffic would increase, and advertising and ecommerce would boom.

@jason - thanks for the clarification. Great philosophy!

The problem with making your site 20% better is that most people think that it can happen overnight.

If you make a page that is 20% better than everything else, and then someone makes a page 20% better than your page...is it 24% better than the original page, or 4% better than yours?
Burke Jones says on March 9, 2008
I fully agree - I tried for a long time to make it in small niches. I am sure it will work, but I found myself spread so thin, with NO passion in any of the markets.
Once I started writing about, making videos and interacting with my list in the Network Marketing niche (which is huge) - my income went up and I was having way more fun!
I say head the a competitive niche that you are passionate about to stay with long term!
